POPULAR APPOINTMENT.

Melbourne, December 15. Sir G. H. Reid has been offered and has accepted the High Commissionership. (Received 16, 10.0 a.m) Sydney, December 16. The appointment of Sir George Aeid as High Commissioner of Australia is eulogised by the Sydney press. The "Telegraph" says the Commonwealth has secured as a representative one of the most brilliant men trained in its political service. The ' Herald " says : " Both as a buslness'man and as a diplomatist Sir George is the most excellent choice that could be made.

The appointment is for five years at a salary and expenses of £SOO per annum.
