Railway batted first, and compiled 187 runs, Carter 72, Dickenson 38, Stevens 24, Cameron 17 and Minett 10 were the principal scorers. Beake took five wickets for 5Q runs, Burtenshaw one for 22. Hughes one for IS and O'Brien one for 26. Two men were run out. United replied with 169 runs, of which Kendall scored 51, Wright 45 and Hughes 35, all batting freely. Minett secured five wickets for 49 runs and Mossong two for 15, being the best bowlers for the Railway team. THIRD GRADE. St Matlhew's commenced their match with Havelock at Cornwall Park, and, batting first, compiled 74 runs (Brumby 22, Masters 22 and S. Land 10). Redpath got iour wickets f or 29, Liley two for 13, Evans two for 20, McCutcheon pne for 12. Havelock totalled 67 (McCutcheon 10, Evans 11, Brunt 13, Ellison 25). Brumby three wickets for 21 and Heslop two for 17 were the most successful trundlers. St Matthew's in their second innings had four wickets down for 16 runs. The fixture Napier High School v. Scinde was not played. FIXTURES: The following are the fixtures for the first round of the Hawke's Bay Cricket Association's First Grade Championship:— November 27: Ahuriri v. County, at Hastings; Scinde y.United, Recreation ground.
