The discussion on the Financial Statement will be commenced on Tuesday next. Mr A. J. Berry man returned yesterday from Blenheim, where he has been spending a holiday during the Jubilee Celebrations. Mr Roland D'Anvers and Miss D'Anvers left by this morning's express en route for Wanganui on a holiday trip. Part 3 of the Statistics of the Dominion of New Zealand for the year 1908, is to hand from the Government Printer. It is the section dealing with Population and Vital Statistics. Recently a line of 500 mutton carcases, treated by the Linley process, were shipped from Argentina to Britain. The experiment is reported to have been successful. The cultivation of the poppy in China and the use of opium are to cease in 1916, the cultivation being reduced by one-tenth yearly. Those who still retain the habit at the end of this period are to be banished. Mr S. Rout, of Auckland, who has visited Hastings and neighbourhood on behalf of the District School libraries, left by train for Napier this morning. The result of his visit has been the promise of 100 new books to be forwarded to the Hastings School, as also 500 more or less to be placed amongst the country schools in proximity to Hastings where aid in books is needed, fhanks are expressed to all Hastings subscribers who have aided the object. The annual report of the Department of Agriculturei (1909) is to hand from Mr Geo. Bisset, Editor of Publications. The of the work to those who fallow agricultural and pastoral callings is so wellknown that it does not require a multiplication of words from us to sing its praises. Matters of especial interest and value are contained under the reports of experiments, and investigations made by officers of the Department during the year. The publication is one which should be tound in every progresssive settler's home.

The sitting of the Magistrate's Court to-day, was the shortest experienced for some time. The Court opened at 10 o'clock and concluded at 11.15. Several defended cases were adjourned. Six women and girls are wanted for the Frimley Canning Factory. The names and addresses of women, girls and boys who would like work at the Factory for the coming season are also required. The crop of green peas will be ready for picking in two weeks. In this issue Messrs Hatrick and Co. insert an advertisement in connection with their holiday service on the " Rhine of Maoriland." Steamers leave Wanganui and Taumaranui on Tuesdays. Thursdays and Saturdays, and connect with the Railway system at both termini. A visit to beautiful Pipiriki and the unique houseboat are included in the service. This week's issue of the "Graphic" contains particulars of an interesting memorial, which is to be erected at Ship Cove, Queen Charlotte Sound, in commemoration of the landing of Captain Cook. Photos are published of the Memorial Committee, with Mr R. McNab and Mr A. McCallum, Mayor of Blenheim, and a view of Ship Cove, showing the position of the monument. The design of the memorial, a handsome Corinthic column, 22ft high surmounted by a figure of Captain Cook is also shown. The new issue of postage stamps was circulated for the the first time on Monday. Thedesign and colour of the penny stamp remains the same as before except that "Dominion of" has been prefixed to the words "New Zealand." The highly decorative signs of other values have been superseded by a portrait of the King in Field Marshal's uniform. The new stamps are printed in attractive colours, and will no doubt receive the attention of collectors. The old I%d stamps are to be entirely withdrawn from issue.
