MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS
SOCIALISTS OVERWHELMINGLY DEFEATED. London, November 2. The returns of the municipal elections are still incomplete. They show that the Liberalsland Unionists in the provinces about hold their own, but that the Socialists suffered an overwhelming defeat in many districts. (Received 3, 8.30 a.rr.) London, November 2 The Progressives won 16 seats in Canberwell, 7 in Southwark and 17 in Hackney. Municipal Reformers gained 28 seets in Battersea, where they now hold 52 out of 54. The turnover is largely due to Socialist candidates. The chief fea ure of the London election was the success of the Reformers at Battersea, where tw > Progressive Socialists were elected. Excepting for the loss of the Reformers' majority at Southwark and Lord Monkswell's defeat at Chelsea, generally the Reformers ■maintain the advantage they gained at the last election.
