Local and General.

The prize money cheques for the autumn show of the H.B. Agricultural and Pastorial Society have been made out for some time but the secretary has been unable to get them signed owing to the absence of the treasurer in Wellington. He hopes to have them out at the beginning of next week. The profit from the recent autumn show is about £35, which is a matter for congratulation, for the surplus has never been so large before, and as a matter of fact the balance has frequently been on the wrong side in previous years.

i Mr James Adamson's hut at the Clive Grange beach was totally destroyed by fire on Wednesday afternoon. The hut was leased by Messrs Greene. Hirons (2) and Ferguson, or Hastings, during the summer months. A quantity of personal effects, fishing boating gear was destroyed. The hut was locked up on Monday evening and left safe, and it is supposed that rats set fire to the place as phosporous poison was laid for them. Mr Jack Hawkins and his son made great efforts to burst the door in and save the effects, but theifire had too strong a hold on the building. Mr T. E. Nottage, Inspector of Orchards, has forwarded to Auckland to-day a consignment of 25 cases of local-grown apples and pears for cool storage with the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Co., Ltd. The Department of Agriculture has made arrangements for similar consignments from each of the principal fruit growing centres of the Dominion with a view to proving the advantage of cool storage, as it is felt that development in this direction will prove of considerable financial benefit to fruitgrowers generally! The Hastings consignment, which is well graded and packed and a splendid commercial sample, consists of the following varieties : —Apples : Rome Beauty, Sturmer, Stone Pippin, Jonathan, Lord Wolseley and Dougherty. Pears: Winter Nelis, Josephine, Beurre Bosc, Beurre Diel, Le Lectier, Doyenne du Cornice and Vermont Beauty.
