MR BARCLAY'S PETITION TO UNSEAT |VIR THOMSON. A petition has been lodged by Mr A. R. Barclay against the election of Mr G. M. Thomson for Dunedin North. Two judges will determine the matter at a sitting which will probably be held in Dunedin during the vacation. In his petition Mr Barclay states that on the first declaration of the poll Mr Thouison was declared to have received 3383 votes, and petitioner 3381. Subsequently petitioner says he received three seamen's votes and was, on the returning officer's recount, allowed one vote which had previously been treated as informal, " so that the number of valid votes received by the petitioner was apparently 3385." Petitioner says he was, nevertheless, in the public declaration of the poll, credited by the returning officer with 3376 votes only, or Q less than formerly, and Mr Thomson was declared to have received 3382 votes, twelve ballot-papers being rejected as informal. Petitioner alleges that on the scrutiny of the rolls six votes given or recorded in his favour were improperly disallowed by the returning officer, on the alleged ground " that ; three voters who had voted for peti- | tioner had so voted in two different I polling booths, where no such dual t voting actually took place." ; JUDGES APPOINTED. t PER PRESS ASSOCAITION. r 5 Dunedin, January 5. The Chief Justice has appointed ; Justices Williams and Denniston to f hear the Dunedin North election ? petition at the end of the month, r _
