COMMEMORATING NGUTU- I O-TE-MANU. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION Hawera, Septembei 7. There was a great gathering at Ngutu -o- te - Manu yesterday to commemorate the engagement in which Major von Tempsky fell forty years ago. Seven survivors of the fight were present. The assemblage was addressed by ihe Hon. R. McMab, who said we were living in a fool's paradise, and must not think because we now had no enemies within the border that the defence problem was solved. Mr C. E. Major, M.P., and others spoke. Volunteer corps from all parts of the district took part in the proceedings. [The engagement in the bush at Ngutu-o-te-Manu took place on September 7, 1868. Major von Tempsky, Captains Buck and Palmer. Lieutenants Hunter and Hastings and fourteen men were killed.]
