Rather a stylish-bred horse was unearthed at the Woodthorpe races on Saturday last. The winner of the Cup (Olympus) was bred in Auckland, and is by Phoebus A.pollo—sire of Apologue, the winner of the last Melbourne Cup—-from Aida, the dam of Impulse, a New Zealand Cup winner. Olympus was purchased by Mr E. J. Watt as a yearling for something like 400 guineas, who subsequently sold him for a very low figure. Defeat (The Officer Queen < f Trumps) winner of a double at W10:thorpe, was bred at the Hon. J. D. Ormond's breeding establishment. Mr T. Quinlivan has broken in a full-brother to Merriwai, and 0:1 appearances should be given a chance to distinguish himself " between the flags." The pony Merrimanu (Merrivvee — Fleetwing) is an inmate of Quinlivan'* stable, and is having an easy time of it just row. ' A PENCILLERS' COMBINE. Although about 20 bookmakers were present at the Woodthorpe , meeting on Sa urday only two plied their calling. When it became known that the fee was to be 5 guineas, and ' ilso required to di posit £25 as a guar- ' intee of their bona fides, ii was.agreed ' :o get two of the number to license, :he remainder to "pool" £lO each and :o divide the proceeds. About £2OO vas nested 011 the day.
