Oblivion and Defeat. In connectian with the serious accident which happened at the Wellington Winter Club's meeting yesterday (the particulars of which appear on page 4), Mr George Fairbrother, brother of the rider of Prospector, in response to an urgent telegram, proceeded to Wellington last night, leaving here by the " Wild Cat." The unfortunate rider is very seriously injured, and little hopes of his recovery are entertained. To-day a private message was received from Mr Jack O'Connor, which read:—" Joe O'Connell badly bruised ; Fairbrother spent 1 a frightful bad night; very little hope." Fairbrother is about 28 years of age. and has resided in Hastings with his mother and sisters for many ears.
