(special to standard.) Christchurch, February 14 There was a large attendance at the Exhibition to-day, the band contest proving once again a strong attraction.
I Mr W. H. Mork, of Sydney, played f organ accompaniments to the violin solos of his brother at a well-attended concert in the afternoon, and several organ solos at a concert in the evening, which appealed strongly to a large audience. Mr West, who has been exhibiting at half-hour intervals daily since the Exhibition opened moving pictures in a small hall known as the Castle Theatre, gave his 1107 th consecutive display this evening. Mr West has now put through one and a half million feet of film, or over 285 miles, and some 24 million photographs have, he | states, been projected on the screen. He claims that this is a world's record likely to stand for some time. The Hawke's Bay Maoris gave a performance in the Pa this afternoon before a large attendance. Already their entertainments have achieve a popularity second to none that have been given in the Pa before them. Miss Jennings, who had the distinction of being the millionth visitor to the Exhibition, was presented with the promised gold watch by Mr Fowlds, Minister in charge, this afternoon, the presentation being accompanied by a congratulatory speech. The ceremony was not a public one. The Westland school cadets, numbering 240 boys and 19 officers, arrived at che Exhibition to-day, and went into camp for the usual week's training.
The demonstrations of bee handling and hive manipulation given by Mr I. Hopkins, Government apiarist, and hia assistants at the Government bee exhibit, are a popular feature at the Exhibition. The keenest interest is taken iu the observation hive. Bandsmen who have been witnesses of the popularity of such competitions in other centres declare that the quick-step contest on Saturday should attract an attendance to the Exhibition of fully 20,000. This event is expected to be far and away the most attractive to the public of the entire programme of contests. It will be easily the largest and probably the finest exhibition of its kind yet seen in the colony. Preparations are new complete for the military tattoo to-morrow night i a which all competing bands will take part. Given favorable weather, of which there is at present every indication, a unique spectacle should be afforded. The secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association reports having secured the largest entry on record for the championship meeting to be held on the Exhibition sports ground cn Thursday and Saturday next. The entries for the championship events number no fewer than 186, and the various handicaps have drawn the enormous entry of 317. Novelty will be a Strang feature of the Canterbury Automobile Association's motor gymkhana to be held on the sports ground on Saturday, March 9th.
Christchurch, February 15 The Baby Show will be held at the Exhibition on Thursday next. Mr G. S. Monro will be judge. The thousandth baby at the Children's Rest i 3 expected on Tuesday or Wednesday.
