A cable f com London announces the death of Mr George Herring, Chairman of the City of London Electric Lighting Company, and a well-known philanthrophist. The cause of death was appendicitis. The Chief Dairy Commissioner, Blr J. A. Kinsella, has resigned. His severance from the Department of Agriculture dates from Saturday last. Mr D. Cuddy, Assistant Dairy Commissioner, will probably succeed him. The Catholic Church was filled to overflowing last evening, when the Rev. Father Clune, who in conjunction with Rev. Father Lowham, is conducting the Mission, delivered an impLessive and inspiring sermon on " Faith." At the Police Court this morning, before Ml 0. Hughes, J.P., W. Craike was fined 5S for flrunnkenness, and William Rea was mulcted in a fine of CI for a similar ofience, in default seven days. Bobert Mackenzie, who was stated by the police to be a " bit soft," was dismissed on a charge of vagrancy on condition he proceeded to work.

A Press Association telegram states that Mr M. M. Kirkbride, M.H.R. for Manukau, died yesterday, aged 58 years, He left Wellington m bud health some time before the session was over, and was recently removed into a private hospital at Auckland lor treatment. The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon. Mr lurkbride was an old colonist of the best type, and took a great interest m agricultural matters. He won the respect of people of all shades of political opinion.

There was a large attendance at the Bible Class held in the Methodist Young ilea's Institute yesterday. The subject of the Bible reading was " Practical Christianity as ponrtrayed in Romans, Chapter II." The Leader gave a stirring address on the chapter. This was followed by a well thought out address on the life and work of Nehemiah, given by Mr C. L. Carr. A feature of the meeting was the musical portion. The harmonium sent out from England to the Class by an old friend of the Leader \va? used for the lirst time, and was found very helpful in tie service of praise. One of the members assisted with his violin, and it is the intention of the Class to form an orchestra, several members being w'Tling to join.

Several camping parties have already taken quarters at that favourite resort. Miss Hobbs left for Wellington this morning to make application for s position as nurse in the Wellington Hospital. An unfortunate accident happaned to the two-year-old son of Mr G. Heaps on Saturday, when in the company of his mother. The Hastings Borough Council advertise they intend to propose to raise a special loan of £4OOO for providing a supply of water and pumping machinery for lire extinguishing purposes in certain parts of the town. Rev. P. Ramsay and Mr J. J. Campbell left by the express this morning to represent the Hastings Presbyterian Church at the Conference to be opened in Dunedin tomorrow. The Premier and Minister for Lands, and perhaps another member of the Ministry, will be giving addresses during this month in various parts of the North Island on the Government land proposals. An Auckland telegram says—A fishing boat capsized in the Tamaki riverlast night. It was swept under the bridge, the mast catching in the archway and overturning her. An Italian fisherman named Trobrook was thrown into the water and drowned. The Napier Battalion Band have intimated, that owing to it having been decided to determine priority iu the procession at the Hospital Sunday Demonstration by ballot, they will not give their assistance. This is surely a very unpatriotic position to take. A Nelson telegram states: —The long dry spell, which was causing feai-s of shortage of water in the city and anxiety among farmers, was broken up to-day by heavy rain which was general in the district. The rain will save the situation hero, as in Canterbury, it is coming in the nick of time. Twenty members of the Hastings Lawn Tennis Club visited the courts on Saturday, and the three courts were engaged all the afternoon. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies. Four lady members of the jlub will play a match against four of the Horetaunga School boys on Wednesday.

There will be a large number of athletic feats, interspersed with vocal and musical items by some of Hawke's Bay's best talent which includes Mr George Edwards, a young baritone from Auckland. Judging by the interest manifested in the entertainment, we predict a large attendance. Tho bjx plan for Mr [Sydney Iloben's concert on Friday evening is now open at Hall's Tho programme is on generous lines, and nearly (JO people will be concerned in it. Of Mr Iloben's playing, the New Zealand Ilerafd (Auckland) writes: —"Mr Hoben's recital at the Opera House was a brilliant success. He proved,. himself to be an artist possessing all the qualifications, both of ability and training, necessary for the satisfactory interpretation of music of a high order. Ho has remarkable delicacy of touch and facility oE execution. A feature was the exceedingly line tone. and artistic expression with which bis performance was endued."
