GRUOM BURNT TO DEATH. (Per Pre** Association). Auckland, March 15. A fire at Howick destroyed Crawford's stables. A groom, named Harry Cunningham, aged 63, was burnt to death. The fire was discovered at about eleven o'clock last night, when it had a strong hold in the loft, where Cunningham slept. No effort could be made to save him. Twenty horses stabled below the loft were got out. Four busc?, a brake, harness, and fodder were destroyed, of r total value of £IOOO. There was no insurance. The Convent adjoining had a narrow escape The walls were very badly scorched. Danuevirke, March 15 Shortly before two o'clock this morning a fire was discovered at the back of Wylie and Co s store adjoining the Advocate office. Tlk tire started in the bulk department mar the oil men'is stores, and burnt fiercely : but the brigade, backed up by a jpleudid pressure of water, got the fire under and saved the mam building. The stock was hopelessly damaged by water and smoke.

Patterson'.: residence closely adjoining had a narrow escape. Th> insurances are :—Building.; : £SOO in Alliance office. Stock: £I6OO in Alliance, Liverpool, Loudon and Globe, and ttouth British. The loss on the stock and building over insurance is estimated at £ISOO.
