TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 1899. HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY'S SHOW.

For the causa that lacks assistance, For the wrongs that need resistance, For the future in the distance, And the good that we can do.

The first show in connection with the recently - formed Horticultural and Industrial Society opens in the Princess Theatre, Hastings, to-morrow. The Society has been started under most favorable auspices. It has been enthusiastically supported by horticulturists generally, and all that now remains to ensure its success is the attendance of the public. That this will be forthcoming we have not the slightest doubt. There are many reasons why a Horticultural and Industrial Society should be supported. In the first place the shows connected with such institutions cultivate a wholesome rivalry amongst growers, and a love for Nature among nongrowers. In the second place they advertise the resources of a district—the fertility of the soil and its adaptability for the cultivation of fruit, &c. Thirdly, they form a very pleasant reunion and bring visitors to the town. These reasons alone should induce the public to extend a warm support to the Society. There is nothing more beautiful to look upon than wellcultivated flowers, fruits and vegetables. They inspire humanity with reverence, ihduce a love for the higher forms of creation, and cultivate superior tastes in all who behold them. A people which has no love for Nature has little care for itself. It is sincerely to be hoped that the attendance at the Horticultural Society's show iftill demonstrate that in Hastings we are not lacking in self-respect. The Committee of the Society is displaying economy in its first effort, but we have no doubt that the response of the public on Wednesday and Thursday will be such as will warrant a greater outlay in prize money in the spring.
