January Ist and 3rd: Wairarapa race meeting. January 12th : Pahiatua race meeting. January 26th: Dane virke hack meeting; nominations close January sth. MISCELLANEOUS PARS. fI3Y I.AM Kli.: In my notice of the winning jockeys yesterday I said in error that the presentation whip would be given to the rider of the greatest number of winners. I should have said to the rider with the highest average of points. This arrangement will give the lesser lights a show. I should j be glad if the local riders would furnish i me with a list of their placed mounts for ! tin's season's racing only. It would help me greatly in my scoring Percy White, who rode Chasseur at Palmcrston North, got one of the biggest ovations yet accorded a horseman in New j Zealand. lam glad of it. It is a fitting tribute to one who is second to no rider in the colony for cleverness, energy, and judgment on the race track. As the Hastings Standard does not publish on New Year's Day, I shall not be able to give my readers any ad\ice on Monday's racing. But in passing let me remark that WaddeU's, Martin's, Gooseman's, and Edwardes' stables are all cherry ripe, and will score heavily at the meeting. New Forest has been physicked, and will be a non-starter at to-morrow's races. He is reported to have pulled up sore at Paltnerston. It is estimated from a rough balancesheet that the profits of the Manawatu summer meeting will be £7OO. That is a most wholesome state of affairs and tends to point to the increasing popularity of races held in Palmerston. At the second day of the Lower Valley meeting on Tuesday, King's Bowman won the Grandstand Handicap, paying .£1 lis; liuamahunga the Telegraph Handicap, paying £3 17s ; Come Again the Hack Welter, paying £1 o 13s ; and Phyllis the Saddle Eace, paying £'4B 12s. H.B. MEETING. The summer meeting of the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club opens to-morrow on the Hastings course. This year the meeting is to extend over two days. That the innovation will be appreciated by sports and Hastings people alike goes without saying. Considering the weather, the course is in fairly good order, though somewhat on the hard side. The appointments of the course are very complete, and everything has been done to secure the enjoyment of visitors. That the catering should again be in the hands of Mr 11. Winsley is a sufficient guarantee that nothing will be left undone. The starting will be in the capable hands of Mr HVipe:"". ■>.;:! to-iwrnnv ! with the Hu.dicF.ip, in ? "U'C: horsi- i Jjiii::e ws badiy ; injured at iainu..: niid -.il! not star:. Gold Cup failed to run forward at the same meeting. Tire has been going well and strong, and I like his chance. Nightingale is nicely weighted at 7st 91b, and Maid Marion, if well, is not out of it with 7st 61b. Woodlander would surprise me by running into a place, but Straybird at 7st 41b will surely make things hum. I think the winner will come from either

Tire or Strayhirh, with Maid Marion the next best. First Handicap Hurdle Race. Missfire was # so sore after Palmerston that I must put him down as a nonstarter. Sylvanus could only run a bad third in the Welter at Kaikora. Rhino is not going as well as I would like, and I don't think think that he can beat Capon Rouge with only a stone difference. A slashing race between them will result. Capon Rouge... ... ... 1 Rhino 2 Sylvanus ... ... ... 3 President's Handicap. Cifcnr de Lion was badly galloped on at Palmerston, and may not start. Target is nicely placed with 7st 121b. New Forest will not start. Douglas, with a pound less, is also well placed. Golden Plover appears to me behind in condition, which may also be said of Primula, who cannot beat Tire on the track. Aphony is well in at 6st 12!b, hut his luck is out. I like the light weight, Tirant D'Eau, at 6st 111b. The race should be one of the best cf the day, and the post may be passed in this order: Tirant D'Eau 1 Aphony , ~, f J Ormond's selected 8 Trial Handicap. Stockville is not cherry ripe, I fancy, and although Dottrell is meeting better company I don't believe Tirant D'Eau can beat her at even weights. I cannot see that Te Ngahae, at 7sfc 91b, has a chance, as he is giving weight to two lower down who can beat him. Nukuiau hadn't a hope at Kaikora, and can have no chance. Nansen will ran a big race, but Hobart, with Vst 81b, is held safe by any of the light weigths, of which Coolgardie, Mai re, Hikomai, and Uila are big outsiders, whose only usefulness will b# in swelling the totals on the machine. A close-run race will see them home somewhat in the following order ; Tirant D'Eau (if started, if not) Dottrel, with Wiritea and Te Ngaehe the next v best. I Two-year-old Handicap. . Tins Meeting will be well patronised by Manawaisi and Wanganui sports. The results may be as follow Flying.—Marino or Flying Shot. Rangitikei Cup.— Zanella. Hurdles.—Saltador. Haclc T Turdles.—Plain Bill. Hack It ice.—Aquafortis or Petroline. Stewards' Handicap.—Marino or Coin. Grand Stand Handicap. Crimson Streak or The Onyx. THE WAIRARAPA MEETING. Wellington sports are likely to patronise the Wairarapa meeting, to be held at Tauherenikau on January Ist and 3rd. The following horses should not be far away : Trial Hack.—Saltatorial or Wish. 1 Flying.—On Dit or Voltaire. Hack Hurdles.—Kia Ora. Flying Hack.—Whario or Lady Agnes. Wairarapa Cup. Ruamaliunga or King's Bowman. Nikau Hack.—Daphne or Sing Song. Welter.—Nero or Ruainahntiga. Hack Welter.—Off Chance or Come Again. TRAINING NOTES. Tl3y Lancer.l I took particular note this morning of horses on the track that will run to-morrow. Tire, engaged in the New Year Handicap and President's Handicap, ran a fast round with Tirant D'Eau (President and Trial) whom he held safe. Nightingale (New Year's and Welter) did a slow round at half pace none too well. Stray bird New Year's) did as he liked with Stockville (Trial) for once round in fast time. Rhino (Hurdles) galloped two fast rounds, the last with Aphony. He pulled up distressed. Douglas (President's) did a fast circuit with Golden Plover, Huatai chipping in for four furlongs. Douglas was blowing hard when pulled up. Golden Plover (Presidents) ditto. Huatai (Christmas) I like. He ran a nice six furlongs. Dottrell (Trial) and Brennan (Welter) ran four furlongs. Brennan under the whip all the way down the straight. Te Ngaehe (Trial) and Whiritea (Trial and Welter) did a fast round, the latter having all the best of it. Hobart (Trial) ran once round slow ; he's not fit for hack class just now. Hikomai (Trial) ran a fast five furlongs in slow time. Victoria Cross (Two Year Old) ran a strong four furlongs in moderate time. She is not so good as she's cracked up to be. The St. George filly (ditto) ran six furlongs. She is very green and a bad one off the mark. She stands a big show of getting left at the post. Pistol Grip (Welter) did long, slow work. He is very fit.
