CRICKET.
The secretary of the Surrey Cricket Club says that an Australian cricket team would be welcomed in 1899. Mr S. H. Pardon, editor of " Wisden's Cricketers' Almanac," says that nothing but good can come from the action of Umpire Phillips in "noballing" Jones, of Adelaide. It is stated that the promoters of the English team have compromised with George Gift'en, who will go into practice for the third test match. Noble will probably replace Lyons in the next test match. After the next test match, Ranjitsinjhi undergoes another operation on his tonsils, and then rests for a fortnight. The match, N.S.W. v. Victoria, began at Melbourne yesterday. The local team batting first, have lost seven wickets for 276 runs (Worrall 45, Trumble 40, Cliller 45, Graham 54 and M'Michael 28 not out). A late telegram says the Victorians are all out for 820 runs. The Hawke's Bay and Taranaki teams met at Napier on Christmas and Boxing Days, the match ending in an easy win for the home team by an innings and 37 runs. Hawke's Bay put together 884 runs, of which Wolstenbolme made 103 in faultless style; F. Nelson 40, Marshall 47, Cato 81, Wilson 29, Fannin and Gibson 15. and Lusk 11 being the double-figure Bcorers. Taranaki responded with 124 and 172. Fannin was by far the most successful bowler for the home team. The Canterbury v. Auckland match began at Auckland yesterday. The Canterbury made 182 runs in their first innings, to which Auckland replied with 90. In their second innings, Canterbury havo lost tour wickets for 81 runs. At the luncheon adjournment to-day the game stood : Canterbury, 187 runs for eight wickets,
