Hastings District School.

ANNUAL DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES.

The distribution of prizes to the pupils of the district schools took place in Hastings to-day, preparatory to breaking up for the holidays, Mr J. A. Smith presented the children of the infant school with their prizes in the forenoon, and a fair number of the children and their friends assembled in the Princess Theatre this afternoon at 2 o'clock for the purpose of witnessing the successful pupils receive their prizes at the hands of Mr C. A, Fitzroy. The proceedings were diversified by the children rendering the choruses, " Where art thou, beam of light," " The Fairy Song," and " Carnovale," under the baton of Mr Smith, accompanied on the piano by Miss Grace Roach. The choruses were admirably sung. Miss Hose Cooper received the coveted prize as dux of the whole school, amidst loud cheers, and as the recipients appoached to receive their prize the applause from their fellow pupils was loud and hearty. Mr Fitzßoy, in addressing the children, said lie was pleased to present the prizes for the first time, which was due to the fact of Captain Russell being unable to be present. He congratulated Mr Smith and his staff on the excellent result of the examination, and congratulated the children on having a headmaster and a committee who took such a great interest in them byproviding such splendid prizes. They should also feel indebted to the ladies and gentlemen who took part in the recent Magpie Minstrel entertainment, the proceeds of which went to buy the books. He spoke in flattering terms of Mr Smith and Miss Percy, and extended a hearty welcome to Mr Martin on his return from England. He spoke in the highest terms of praise concerning the School Committee and the energy of the hon. secretary, and concluded by wishing the children a happy Christmas and bright newyear. The proceedings concluded with cheers for the Mayor, the headmaster, Misses Percy, Roach, and Hartshorn, and the holidays. The following is the prize list: — Dux.—R. Cooper.
