A first folio of Shakespeare and many early classics included in the Wrottesley Hall library were burned. Captain 11. M. S. Gibson has been appointed commander of the warship Katoomba. Sea-going engineers at Glasgow in the employ of the Allen Line Steamship Company have struck for the same rate of wages as are "paid to engineers on shore. Dec. 18. The Tokamaru, which was recently towed into Rio in a disabled condition, has arrived. An examination of her cargo of frozen meat showed that it was faded and off color, but otherwise undamaged. An Anarchist dressed as a woman was found tied to a tree at Saragossa, Spain, as punishment for having failed to execute the society's order to murder General Weyler. Butter dull, quoted from 90s to 100s, new samples touching 102s to 104s ; Danish quoted from 104s to 110s. Mild weather is having a depressing effect on the market. Dec. 10. Mrs Carew, who was convicted in Yokahama, Japan, of poisoning her husband and was sentenced to death, but whose sentence was afterwards commuted to penal servitude for life, has been incarcerated after her removal from Japan. The Home Secretary has directed she be incarcerated in a convict prison.
