'THE INSURANCE COMPANIES AFFECTED. THE FIRE HAS A BIG START OF THE BRIGADE. (Per Press Association. —Copyriyht.) Melbourne, Nov. 23. The following particulars are given of the actual insurances in colonial companies in connection with the recent fire South British £20,000, Victoria £30,000, New Zealand £17,000 South Australian £16,000, Australian Alliance £16,000, Colonial Mutual £14,000, Dei went and Tamar £II,OOO, United £IO,OOO, Indemnity £IO,OOO, Standard of New Zealand £IO,OOO, United Australian Mutual £IO,OOO, National of New Zealand £9OOO, Cornwall £6OOO, Queensland Mutual £3300, City Mutual £2OOO ; total £1,873,000. The aggregate of insurances in British offices is set down at £408,580. It is estimated excess lines which cannot be placed in colonial or British offices amount to about £105,000. This day. There is overwhelming evidence, despite the assertion of the brigade authorities to the contrary, that the fire lit up the City fully 50 minutes before the brigade were cognisant.
