SPORTING NEWS.

[By Girsy Grand.]

The Queensland Derby was won by the Gozo colt The Guard. The Auckland performer, Tit, died last week. She won the Auckland Guineas in 1892. llaria has found a new owner on the the West Coast of the South Island. Lady Zetland produced a filly foal to Phaeton last Saturday. Mr Stead has won the Derby on eight occasions. Mr G. Hunter has purchased a full sister to C'ynisea. Hotspur in the Press credits Natator as being the sire of Dudu. Soiunus claims L>udu as his daughter. Which is right! Percy "White, who rode Waiuku to victory in the Cup gives the following account of tiie race :—" I got Waiuku away well, the start being a good one, and as I was on the outside I waited my chance to get next the rails, the opportunity coming aft er we turned for Cutts's. The pace seemed to be pretty good till we were going down the back against the wind, when several horses were strurg out in front and the dust was rising from the leaders. As we reached the three-quarter mile post from homo Lord Eosslyn and Venus began to come back to me, and then Haria, who at first appcarc-d to be running strongly, also came back and checked me getting a clear run, but at the five furlong post I got a chance and made an effort, getting through on the inside, and when I got clear before reaching the turn I was third, Epaulet and St Paul were a couple of lengths in front of me, St Paul looking to be going well. Epaulet went at him in the straight, and St Paul was then being ridden, and Epaulet also, and my horse was going well. A furlong after turning the bend I pulled out to make my run, making it rather further from home than I intended as Waiuku was going so well. When 1 got to the leaders St Paul responded again and came with nie, and Epaulet also, and then for a moment Waiuku slightly shortened his stride; but I kept him going, and he answered, and he might have won by a larger margin than he did. I fancied Waiuku from the time I rode him in the Autumn Handicap."
