Hawera, This day
A married woman named Catherine Biren was found on Saturday evening in a fit. She was taken home and later on gave premature birth to a child. She never rallied and died on Sunday morning. At the inquest the medical evidence showed that she was suffering from a form of Bright's disease, which caused the fit and contributed to the fatal result. A verdict was returned accordingly. Dunedin, Oct. 18. David Gillies, engineer at the Walton Park coal mine, lost his life this morning by falling down the shaft. The shaft is 175 feet deep, and there is 80 feet of water at the bottom. He was going down the shaft with the deputy-manager to repair a leak in the pump. After descending 80 feet he appears somehow to have missed his hold and fell. Kenvon, manager, went down over 100 feet to attempt a rescue, but finding he could not the hands were got together, and men were lowered in a barrel. It was not till the afternoon, however, that the body was recovered. Dr Will, who was present, had great difliculty in restraining the men from going down to the rescue and almost certain death. Ivenyon, who worked very hard, suffered so much from exhaustion and the effects of fire damp that the doctor sent him to bed. Gillies leaves a widow and a family of ten.
