The Financial Statement shows a general increase from all sources. The Treasurer stated that the colony was more than convalesent and that she is vigorous. He proposes to reduce the tariff whenever it is for the benefit of the people without injuring the revenue. The Income Tax Act expires by effluxion of time and he proposes to renew it under the title of Wealth Tax. The revenue for 1897 is estimated at £852,000 and the expenditure at £790,000. The total deficit at the end of December, t<S96, was £843,000 but by December, I*9B, he estimates that it will be reduced to £281,000.
