AN INJUSTICE.

[To The Editor.] Sir,—Allow me through your valuable columns to give vent to what I call an injustice to the ratepayers of Hastings. While taking my Wednesday afternoon stroll I wended my way along Karanm road and thence along Ellison road. Much to my surprise I found the' corporation staff of laborers, three men, and two drays employed carting earth from an adjourning street for the purpose of raising aud filling up the footpath in front of a new cottage recently erected for one of the ex-civic fathers of Hastings. On the door handle was a card " To Let, apply, &c." Now, Mr Editor, where I consider the injustice comes in is that on walking about 100 yds further on I find a shop and two cottages occupied by two industrious hard - working families who during the whole winter could not gain entrance from the road until they carted, at their own expense, earth and shingle, and even now the road is quiet impassable. If the Council had employed these men and carts to fill up approaches such as these, which are very numerous in our borough, they would be only doing what they should do ; but as the footpath where the men were at work was high and dry in all weathers I fail to see why such preference should be granted when really not required. Trusting some of our independent city councillors will take this matter up on behalf of the ratepayers whom they represent and put a stop to private jobs.—l am, &c., Ratepayer.
