Labor Day in Wellington.
(Bv Telegraph)
(Per Press Association.)
Wellington, This day
The weather partly cleared up as the morning wore on, and large crowds congregated in the streets to witness the labor procession. It was a large turn-out. The various trades unions and representative display in the procession was even better than that of previous years. Some of the trade displays and decorations were very fine, the tableaux of the carpenters and the seamen being especially noteworthy. The feature of the procession was the representation of a diggers' hut and camp with miners at work and a team of bullocks attached to a heavily laden waggon, representing a party on the way to the diggings. Mr Ben Tibet occupied a seat at the head of the seamen's division. The procession, which was very long, included six bands. Prizes were offered for competition, and the competitors and local firms vied with each other for pride of position in this respect. The procession traversed the principal streets of the city and was watched by admiring crowds all along the route.
