THE FLORAL FETE, HASTINGS.

[To Thk Editor.] Sir, —I notice that the Floral Fete organised by Mr Hobbs is to be made a public affair. I also observe that the names of several gentlemen who are not members of his flock are down on the programme as committeemen. This is the reason that I venture to ask you to allow me space to make reference to the Fete. I believe the rev. gentleman said last night that they would no nothing to bring a blush to the tender cheek of Christianity. I am afraid, Mr Editor, that Christianity is one thing and Chinch another. 1 doubt the capacity of the Church's cheek in the matter of blushing. That it is blessed with cheek, and plenty of it, is very evident. Does the Church think the public will take any interest in such a pitiable programme as that distributed on Saturday night ? It is said there -will be no approach to gambling, and yet the Church is going to place itself under obligation to the Jockey Club, and so indirectly make money out of the totalisator. And as to swindling, it is on the face of it a palpable attempt to get a great deal out of the public and give them next to nothing in return. Now what possible competition can there be for such paltry awards, and, consequently, what return can the committee make to the public who pay to see the exhibition '? I hope that the committee will have the whole programme revised. If they spend £lO or £SO in prize money they will make a financial success of Fete and provide genuine entertainment for the public.—l am, &c, Tiger Lily,
