«. (Per Press Association.) Auckland, This day. As a result of correspondence between certain brewers and some clergymen the former have promised to aid putting down Sunday trading in tied houses. The publicans, at least a section of them, wished to give the thing a fair trial. Yesterday the new system came into force. The publicans who fell into line kept a watch upon the dissentients. The police report very favorably of the change. They state that groups of thirsty souls kept going into certain public houses, but from the brief space which elapsed before they came out again they believe the landlords had only time to say "No gentlemen, the bar is closed." Last evening the detectives arrested on a warrant a man named Henry Keast on a charge that about June sth he forged a letter purporting to be signed by Lucy Aspin for £2, uttered the same and obtained £i of such sum. Keast is said to have been an Evangelist on the Auckland gumfields some time ago, obtaining this position on the strength of a number of testimonials he had in his possession purporting to have been presented to him in America and Australia. In these addresses he is styled " The Australian Evangelist." At the times mentioned in the addresses, however, Keast has admitted he was overseer on a plantation in Fiji.
