News from the Gold Coast, West Africa, states that the Governor, Sir Will iam Maxwell, has proceeded to the hinterland of Coomassie in order to have an interview with the powerful Mahomedan chief Samory. Two British gunboats of light draught have been ordered to proceed to Boussa, a town on the Niger, where the French established a post in British territory. Sir Daniel Cooper has nominated an English railway expert for New South Wales as successor to Mr Eddy. Lord Jersey endorses the nomination. Typhoid fever continues to spread in the neighborhood of Maidstone. The wool sales are firm and. spirited, competition being brisk and everything selling. Parts, Oct. 4. M. Hanotaux, Minister of Foreign Affairs, is strongly pressing Brazil to effect an immediate settlement of the Arnpo boundary dispute in French Guinea. Cairo, Oct. 4. The whole of the Eastern Soudan has renounced Mahdism. Sydney, Oct. 5. The Government has decided to appoint Mr Oliver, the second Commissioner, to be Chief Commissioner of Railways, vice Mr Eddy, deceased. Mr Ivirkcaldie, chief t:a3ic manager, has been appointed third Commissioner at £ISOO per annum. Mr Oliver's salary has been fixed at £2500.
