- • A FAIRLY SUCCESSFUL TRIAL. (Per Press Awsiatiioi. —< 'i>]>;/ri;/l<t.) London", Oct. 1. The trial of Gray's Australian starting machine took place at Newmarket races yesterday in the presence of the Prince of Wales, Lord Rosebery, Lord Durham, Lord Stanley, J. Lowther and many other»prominent sporting men. The apparatus was used to start a race for which there were nine runners. The machine was regarded w: tli great curiosity by the horses which were greatly exicted and huddled together, some being half turned round when the signal was given to start. Although the trial could not be regarded as entirely satisfactory those present expressed themselves in favor of the machine. The Sportsman, referring to the trial, feels confident that the apparatus will be adopted on the English race courses.
