London, Sept. 29. Wheat is quoted 6d lower in the Mark Lane market. Competition at the wool sales to-day was keen and the opening prices well maintained. Tom Sullivan, the ex-New Zealander, has challenged W. Harries, of Putney, to race on the Tyne for £2OO aside. The Newcastle backers of James Wray, the Australian sculler, are trying to arrange a match with Towns. They offer Towns three seconds start in a race for £IOO aside to be rowed on the Tyne. Erness Cavill and M'Cusker have been matched to swim a quarter of a mile at Westminster on October 26th, and a mile at Leicester on October 30th. Should these events prove indecisive they will meet in a 800 yards race at Manchester. The stakes are £IOO aside. J. A. Jarvis, the Midland Counties champion, and Percy Cavill have arranged to swim a quarter of a mile match, which will take place in a fortnight. Mr Samuel Moss, a Radical, has been elected by a majority of 2340 votes for the East Denbighshire seat in the House of Commons which was rendered vacant by the death of the Right Hon. Sir George Osborne Morgan. Lieutenant - Colonel Horatio D. Pavies, Alderman of Bishopgate Ward, and member of the House of Commons for Chatham, has been chosen Lord Mayor-elect of London for the ensuing year. September 30. The torpedo boat destroyers Lynx and Thrasher went ashore during a fog at Bodmin Point. The Thrasher's steam pipes exploded, killing four stokers. Both vessels subsequently floated, and the Lynx proceeded to Devonport, but the Thrasher, which was badly damaged was towed to Falmouth. Towns has expressed his willingness to row Wray on the Tyne if the latter will concede him five seconds start. Madrid, Sept. 30. General Marcelo de Azeairaga, who succeeded to the Premiership after the assassination of Senor Canovas, has resigned, and the Queen Regent has summoned Senor Sagosta to form a new Cabinet. New York, Sept. 30. The Bryanites have nominated Mr Henry George—the famous single tax advocate —for the Mayoralty of Greater New York. Cairo, Sept. 29. The Egyptians arrested recently in connection with the recent stoning of British troops at a village near here have received heavy sentences. Romk, Sept. 29. After the reverses in the Abyssinian campaign the Italian Government intimated its intention of ceding Kassala, an important fortified town in Abyssinia, in Egypt, but subsequently agreed to retard the cession in order to permit the commencement of the British military operations in the Soudan in the autumn. The Italian Government has notified the Egyptian authorities its reluctance to hold the town beyond December, and the Governor of Suakim has been despatched to Kassala to make arrangements for the cession. Berlin, Sept. 29. The Emperor and Empress of Germany intend visiting Jerusalem. Sydney, Sept. 30. Three bank-note forgers have been sentenced to ten, seven, and five years' imprisonment respectively. The Eddy memorial orphanage fund has reached £2500. The Premier promises to favorably consider the question of subsidising it by a similar amount. The railway employees subscribed nearly half.
