OPENING THE PROCEEDINGS

London, Sept. 29. The Church Congress at Nottingham has been opened. l)r. George Ridding (Bishop of Southwell) was appointed president. Among the prelates who attended were the Archbishop of Sydney, the Bishop of Bailarat, the Coadjutor Bishop of Brisbane and the Piimate of New Zealand. Bishop Barry, incumbent of St. James's, Piccadilly, and formerly Bishop of Sydney, who was among the speakers, expressed the opinion that a free federation of the churches was the bes f j realisation of the Anglican idea visible and would not infringe upon the prime right of self government. Dr. C'owle advocated free interchange of the clergy between the colonies and the United Kingdom.
