THE SCULLING RACE.

FURTHER PARTICULARS. (Per Press Afsocidtinn.— London-, Sept. 28. The race was rowed on a sluggish tide. The wind and weather were favorable, and there was a large attendance of spectators. After the start Towns, ccolly rowed a long steady stroke, contented himself with holding Barry till the mile was reached. The Australian then spurted gamely, with the object of avoiding the wash from Barry's baot. He was leading by half a length at Hammersmith bridge, the time up to this point being Omin 20sec. Tremendous cheering greeted him as he shot the bridge. When nearing the Downs Barry made several gallant efforts to overhaul the leader, who, however, responded splendidly. Towns led by a length at Barnes Bridge, which was reached in 19min ssec. The heavy swell caused by the launches stopped both scullers off Mortlake for a few seconds. Towns was the first to recover, and again went away with the lead, which he maintained to the finish. Towns showed great judgment throughout the race, and rowed in fresh. Barry was rowed out, though he finished gamely enough. The Sportsman commenting on the result of the race, states that it is not able to recall a grander struggle. Sporting Life considers the contest comparable with the race for the championship between Beach and Gaudaur. After the rate Barry's backers offered to take £l5O to £IOO for another match in a month, but the offer was not accepted.
