SPORTING NEWS.
A STARTLING ACCIDENT. TWO HORSES KILLED. INCLUDING A CUP CANDIDATE. BOTH JOCKEYS INJURED. [By Telegraph.] (Per Press Association.) Auckland, This day. Early this morning the New Zealand Cup candidate Lady Anna and the pony Sweet Lavender were killed on Lake Takapuna Beach. They were being galloped on the beach the opposite way, each having horses associated with them, and the heads of Lady Anna and Sweet Lavender came together. The force of the collision caused both to rear and fall dead. Jockey Waldron, who was riding Lady Anna, had his left leg broken, while McEwin, the rider of Sweet Lavender, got a severe scalp wound, which had to be stitched. No bones were broken. He was subsequently removed to the Auckland Hospital.
