A story of terrible suffering and death comes from the Arctic Ocean. The steam whaler Naurach was caught amongst drift ice, 31 of the crew being crushed to death and 11 frozen to death. A passing cutter observed the Naurach's signals of distress at Point Barrow, on the Alaskan coast, and rescued the captain and his wife, two officers and four sailors. Nine of the crew refused to leave the ship, and they are supposed to have perished.
