The movement to erect a memorial to the late Mr Tallis Trimnell met ■with so much success that £GO or £7O were subscribed at once in the room. A committee was appointed with power to add to its number in all parts of New Zealand as it is considered that the memorial should be of a colonial and not parochial character. Sir Green way. a representative of the Cassell Company, has been in Wellington for some time negotiating with the Government for the purchase of the company's patent rights. The matter was only awaiting the Premier's arrival, and probably it will be concluded in a day or two. The sum mentioned is £15,000.
The Colonial Sugar Company has applied to tha Government to impose an extra duty of £2 per ton on beet sugar on the ground that it interferes with the refining industry. The Women's Franchise League has asked the Government to increase the capitation grant to Education Boards to enable cooking to be taught in schools.
Colonel PitE has received a formal letter of thanks to the contingent from the Government.
The contingent has now disbanded and their arms and accoutrements were returned to store yesterday. The Government, however, has issued an order that they should be handed back to the men to become their own property in recognition of their services.
Ths railway classification list is now being printed and will probably be ready for distribution at the end of the month. The lists will show the position of members as on the Ist of April last, and any appeal must be lodged in a month.
The New Zealand Rugby Union refused the request of the Wellington Union for a copy of the evidence upon which the recent disqualifications were based, on the ground that the men were undo- the control of the New Z. n, and some of the eviconiidential nature.
