THE COMMONWEALTH BILL.
THE MEASURE IN VICTORIA UPPER HOUSE. AN EXTRAORDINARY SPEECH BY MR LONGMORE. ( Per Press Association.—Copyright. ) Melbourne, This day. When the preamble of the Commonwealth Bill was being dealt with in the Legislative Assembly on Monday the Attorney-General's amendment was carried adding the words " In reliance on the blessing of Almighty God." Mr Longiuore rose before the question was put saying he would vote for the amendment under protest. He then treated the House to a torrent of denunciation. He considered putting the name of God in such a Bill as the Commonwealth was blasphemy in the face of high Heaven. He had a place before his mind where they open the proceedings with prayer and say " give us this day our daily bread," but in their hearts and in their actions say "If you don't give me a poor man's loaf I will take it by force." They are blasphemers in the sight of God, and I say " woe unto you Pharasees and hypocrites ; you have seized the whole of our territory and you will not allow any man to live."
