The child, who is between four and five years of age, was playing near the flagstaff when she became entangled in one of the ropes. A heavy weight attached to the other end of the rope fell, and the child was hoisted 25 feet. She fell to the ground, striking an iron cleat, which penetrated her body, inflicting a terrible wound. The child is in a very dangerous condition. Westpobt, August 18. While two children named Splaine were playing before a fire last night the clothes of the youngest boy, about four years of age, caught fire. The mother was absent at the time, and the children tried to get to the kitchen of an adjoining hotel, but the clothes of the child were burnt off in the yard. The screams attracted the attention of Mr M'Donnell, a neighbor, who smothered the fire with a rug. The child,' who suffered terrible injuries, was removed to the hospital, where it succumbed this afternoon. The case is a very sad one, the father also being an inmate of the hospital.

As a horse which Colonel Dawson was riding to hounds in Auckland was jumping a stone wall it collided with a cow. Horse and rider fell, and the latter broke his collar-bone.
