Oil our fourth page to-day will be found further particulars of the wreck of the Tasmania ancl a good suggestion for lifebelt drill on all passenger vessels. Tie Borough Council overdraft now stands at j>2-109 7s lOd. Gonstablo O'Brien arrived here yesterday to take up his duties in this district. The boy Dawson, who met with the accident at Jones's foundry, is in great pain, the steel being still embedded in the eye. Amongst the ladies who contributed largely towards the success of the recent Bowlers' ball were Mesdames Reynolds and Mcllroy. The usual Government inspection of the Volunteers was held last night by Ser-goant-Major Pewar. The movements of the men were considered satisfactory. At last night's meeting of the Borough Council Cr. Linney gave notice of motion that public abattoirs be erected in Tonioano, and that all animals be subjected to an inspection before being slaughtered. Owing to the heavy pressure of water the diver at work at the Tasmania yesterday was unable to get at the mails, but hopes in a day or two to bring them all to the surface. The diver was taken ill during the afternoon and medical attendance had to be summoned. At the Borough Council meeting last evening Cr. Dennett gave notice that at next meeting he will move that a tax be put upon bicycles. The machine is becoming so popular in Hastings that at least one councillor can foresee a source of revenue to the council. Sergeant-Major Dewar will attend at St Matthew's gymnasium this evening to give instruction to members of the Club. The institution is sure to become popular, and it is hoped that there will be a large muster to-night. Boys are requested to roll up at 7.80 and the men's class starts at 8. A genuine sale with real live bargains is announced at Brown's, Central Buildings.. The entire stock has been marked at figures that must draw the nimble shilling. Tempting prices will be put upon every item, and the shelves will be cleared in view of an early importation of spring goods. One visit should satisfy all that the reductions are genuine.
The Presbyterian Church concert and social will be held to-niglit at 7.80. The programme includes some of the foremost singers in Hastings, along with performers who are yet to make the acquaintance of local audiences. The 01-ganisers are working the affair very energetically, and should -the weather be at all propitious the church accommodation is certain to be fully taxed. Tyerman's weed destroyer has made a name for itself as a certain eradicator and is now extensively used throughout Hawke's Bay. Its work is deadly, and walks and carriage drives can be kept clear for years by its use. Another of the local enterprising chemist's specialties is Andrew's poisoned grain, which brings sparrows and other small birds to earth in hundreds. The pests only require to eat once and they henceforth cease from troubling. Both preparations may be had in quantities. Last night after the exceptionally heavy showers that fell during the evening Nelson street was under water to a considerable depth, and Avenue road at its junction with Nelson street was also flooded, as were the paddocks immediately surrounding. C-r. Williams, who is about to place on the market that block of land having for its back boundary the town belt and frontage running along the North drain, suggested the connection of the North drain with the creek running through his property to the place known as the " Poplars," whence Nelson Bros, would continue the work to the river. If this is done it will have the effect of relieving the north and main drains and render them capable of coping with the drainage of Nelson street and the adjoining sections. To-night at Vickers' auction room an exhibition of the points of perhaps the best bicycle on the market—the celebrated Victor- -will be given bv one of the best judges of the wheel in the colony, Mr W. A. Thompson. This gentleman will be recollected as having passed through Hastings last year in an endeavor to break the Napier-Wellington record. He succeeded and now wears a medal bearing an inscription notifying the fact that the distance (280 miles) was covered in 18 hours 1 minute, which is an Australasian record and equals that of the big guns of America. Dozens of other records are standing against his name including miles in "28 minutes, and the Wellington to Eketahuna run (98 miles), in 6 hours 40 minutes. Mr Thompson intends to go south shortly and attempt to lower the 50 and 100 mile records, but he is up to his eyes in business just now with the Victors, and cannot spare the time to train. He expects to run all the other makes of machines out of Hastings—that is if the public is determined to get the best value for its money. To-night tests up to a ton will be put on the maeliine, which weighs only The exhibition should prove a draw, especially as the bike can be had on reasonable terms. Messrs G. H. Vickers and Co. sell at their rooms to-morrow furniture, produce, poultry, shrubs, &c. A writ for £'sos has been issued against the proprietor of the Wairarapa Daily Times for wrongfully reporting a judgment. Seventy-eight estates were placed in the hands of the Public Trustee during the month of July. The highest was valued at J65910 and the lowest at £6. An entertainment is being promoted in Lyttelton for the wife and family of the late James M'Nellie, one of those drowned on the Tasmania. Mrs M'Nellie's first husband was killed at Lyttelton some years ago by falling down a ship's hold. Tyerman and Co's Weed Destroyer, for garden paths, carriage drives, &c.
