On our fourth page to-day will he found further particulars of Millionaire Hooley's meat-pooling scheme. The Debating Society holds its regular fortnightly meeting at the Oddfellows' Hall this evening. The subject for debate is : " Is Capital Punishment Justifiable," and with two capable leaders should prove interesting. A large attendance is expected. At a church parade of the Garrison Band (of which Air Syd George is bandmaster) and the Volunteers on Jubilee Sunday in Dunedin the collection amounted to £59, and at a parade of the Dunedin bands in the gardens in the afternoon a collection in aid of the children's ward fund of tlie hospital panned out £•69. The annual meeting of the H.B. Trotting Club was held last evening at Caulton's Hotel, Mr G. Ellis (president) in the chair. There was a large attendance. The report and balance sheet was read and adopted. The latter showed liabilities £44 and assets £3OO, allowing 50 per cent for a depreciation of plant. The election of officers resulted as follows :—President and treasurer, Mr Y\~. Y. Dennett; vice-president, Mr R. Gooseman : committee, Messrs W. Edwards, Maddison, M'lvor, Caulton, Faulknor, Land, Martin and Bussell. Mr G. Ellis was appointed Judge, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded him for services- rendered a=? president. Mr W. Y. Dennett was appointed delegate to the North Island Trotting Association. A resolution was carried unanimously that no bookmaker or his agents be allowed on the trotting course in future. The remainder of the business was of a routine character.
Two front rooms are advertised to let. Mrs "W. Caulton, dressmaker, announces that she has removed from Central Buildings to Station street. We understand that it is the intention of the H.B. Trotting Club to include pony racing in their programmes in future. The programme for the October meeting of the Trotting Club will be drawn up immediately aftertliemeeting of the delegates of the North Island Trotting Association. It may interest some local musicians to know that the Dunedin Garrison Band in the performance of their ordinary duties on Jubilee day marched about twelve miles, playing most of the distance. The enterprising burglar was again engaged in his innocent occupation of aburgling in Napier last night. Hastings people cannot be too careful. A conference of the North Island Trott» ing Associatidn takes place in Palmerston on the 27th inst. On the following tlay a conference of the North and South Island Associations will be held in Wellington. Mr R. M'Naughtan, of the C.8.P., Napier, has just imported a splendid variety of seasonable footwear, and announces that town and country customers alike can rely on getting solid value for their money. There is great concern on the West Coast over a case in which a young girl was charged with perjury. A Justice of the Peace is said to be in trouble over the matter. —Wairarapa Star. During the last few years the New Zealand Assets Realisation Board has disposed of nearly £250,000 worth of land, chiefly in the South Island. The last balance-sheet shows the Board to be £9OOO better off than at the end of its previous financial year.
