At a meeting of the Pahnerston Prohibitionists, held last night, some discussion ensued re Press Agency telegrams re the Rev. E. Walker's remarks at Nelson concerning Palmerston North and the proposals to the New Zealand Alliance. All present felt the deepest regret that Mr Walker, speaking from a distance, should have cast reflections upon a proposal which he evidently completely misunderstood. Wellington, June 17. Dr. Nay lor, who died on the voyage of the Kaikoura, and whose death was reported from Hobart, was organist of York Minister. As an organist he was well-known over England, and he hai been heard iu the Sydney Town Hall. He was Musical Doctor of Oxford, an Honorary Fellow of the Eoval Academy of Music, and was musical examiner to many institutions, including Durham University. Dr Nay lor leaves a widow and five children. In the Supreme Court to-dav the question of costs in the Soler divorce case was argued. Mr -Jellicoe, who appeared for the respondent (Mrs Soler), was awarded £IOO. A further question as to the amount the corespondent (Tucker) has to pay the petitioner is still to be arranged. The enquiry into the fire at Hayman and Co.'s was resumed to-day, but no evidence was adduced to throw any light as to how the fire originated. Mr Lachmann, local manager of the company, said had the doors been opened and the salvage corps sent to work a large quantity of valuable articles would have been saved. The scope of the inquest extends beyond ascertaining the cause of the fire, and evidence will be taken with the view of taking precautions against other serious conflagrations. Up to the present £217 has been promised towards the construction of an artificial lake in Hagley Park. The poultry show of the Christchurch and Sydenham societies combined was opened by the Mayor to-day, there being large entries and a splendid exhibition. Asiiuurtox, June 17. Muuro John Douglas, teller of the Bank of New Zealand, was to-day committed for trial on a charge of embezzling £74, the property of the bank. Bail was allowed, self in £2OO, and two sureties of £IOO each.
