Since being sentenced to death Butler has been quiet and sociable. Extreme care is being taken to prevent further attempts at suicide. The prisoner, besides being heavily ironed, has his hands encased in muffs and is constantly watched. This day. A special issue of penny, two-penny and two pence half-penny Jubilee stamps has been made, the proceeds to go to the Queen's Consumptive Hospital. Melbourne, This Day. Sir Rupert Clarke has been returned unopposed for the vacancy in the Legislative Council caused by the death of Sir Wm. Clarke. . Adelaide, This Day. Good rains are reported throughout the colony. In the Legislative Assembly the Colonial Treasurer announced that the Governor had approved of the following commutation of prisoners' sentences in connection with the Jubilee: First offenders one-sixth, second, one-twelfth ; third or more, one-eighteenth.
