The Flood Relief Fund now amounts to over .£13,000.

The management of the Magpie Ministrcls announce that they will not hold themselves responsible for reserved seats to-night after the commencement of the overture.

The annual meeting of the Heretaunga Lodge, T6, took place last evening, when the installation of Bro. Thos. Morgan, P. J!., as Worshipful Master and the investiture of officers took place. The installing Master was R.W.Dep. G.M. Bro. W. Beilby, the director of ceremonies Bro. F. C. Smith, P.M., and the organist Bro. Bocking. The officers were installed as follows :—lmmediate Past Master, Bro. W. G. Martin ; Senior Warden, Bro. F. Cook ; Junior Warden, Bro. A. Tasker ; treasurer, Bro. D. M'Leod, P.M.; secretary, Bro. G. F. Roach; organist, Bro. H. H. Hunt; Senior Deacon, Bro. G. Land ; Junior Deacon, Bro. R. Shaw; Inner Guard, Bro. W. A. Carter ; tyler, Bro. R. Chudley. Afterwards the members adjourned to the refectory, where a convivial time was spent, Bro. R. Winsley being in charge of a first-class supper. The following toasts were duly honored : —" The Queen and Craft," proposed by W.M. Bro. T. Morgan, song, " The National Anthem," Omnes ; " The G.L., N.Z.," proposed by W.M. Bro. T. Morgan, song Bro. Morgan; "The Caterer,' proposed by W.M. Bro. Graham of the Victoria Lodge, Napier, song, Bro. A. Tasker, and " The Tyler." Bro. Bocking ably officiated as organist.

Four Natives named Hirini, Molii Korana, Wi Koraua, and Wkiririra Renata, had a narrow 7 escape from drowning whilst crossing the river at Omahu yesterday. It appears that in about midstream the canoe in which they were got broadside against the current and capsized. The men got on to the bottom of the canoe and after being carried about threequarters of a mile down the river they were finally washed on to the shingle, apparently little the worse for their adventure. This is not the first accident reported from Omaliu since the destruction of the bridge during the late floods, and in the face of the dreadful probabilities of disaster whilst negotiating this turbulent river, the County Council should lose no time in erecting another bridge.

W. Y. Dennett sells on the premises, Wall road, to-morrow, the household furniture of Mr John Glass ; also a good spring cart. The sale commences at 11 a.m.

The unemployed compositors in Wellington have been offered work at bushfalling at Otaihape, in the Hunterville district, or road making at Waikaremoana. The comps. don't take kindly to the propoal and have asked the Government to give them something else.

In this issue Messrs Hannah and Co. announce a winter sale of ladies' and gentlemen's boots and shoes of every description, and as tliey state their goods are marked at such a low figure as to " eclipse for ever the sun of competition" a good business should ensue.

The Auckland Herald states that there are a number of persons, some of them men and women of education and culture, in that city, who are given to the opium habit. There are establishments where Europeans can go in—and do go in—to get their sixpenny or shilling " opium smoke." There are others who are victims of the morphia, chloral and chlorodyne habit, and who have lost all power of seifcontrol as completely as the habitual drunkard.

An accident happened on Sunday last to a co-operative employee named Edward Bunk, working on the Government Railway works at Hukunui. He was removing a stump when the jack he was using slipped and rolled on him. He was taken to Eketahuna on a truck and was attended by Dr. Murry-Aynsley, who found that his collar-bone was broken and besides being severly bruised war hurt internally. The man is now in a bad condition.

Mr Roger Winsley's capabilities as a caterer have long been acknowledged through this district, and the result is that our genial townsman has his hands as full as they can be at present. The Masonic supper last night could not be equalled outside the large centres, and he has just obtained the catering for the Record Reign and Steeplechase balls and for the H.B. races. Mr Winsley was engaged in Napier on Tuesday last catering for a supper to a Napier resident who is about to depart for England. If ability, pluck, and enterprise count for anything Mr Winslev must be successful.
