LOCAL AND GENERAL.

"W. Y. Dennett and Co.'s sale of Mr John Glass's household furniture, &c., has been postponed till Friday the 18th inst. Stubbs, Paterson, and Co., advertise properties for sale. Early application is necessary. At Asliburton the Hawke's Bay Relief Fund Committee received a total sum of £166 7s 9d in cash, and also six boxes of tea, one ton of flour and one ton of potatoes. Railway employees are to be granted a holiday on the 22nd on full pay. This applies to permanent hands and casual hands who have been employed four months continuously. There appears to be a difference of opinion amongst the local business people as io the day of closing next week. It is generally understood that Record Reign day (next Tuesday) will be observed as a whole holiday and that the shops will remain open on Wednesday. It is time some definite arrangement was announced. We may state that Tuesday is to be observed as a full holiday in Napier.

With reference to the formation of a recreation and cycling track for Hastings Mr Tickers laid a very sensible proposal before last night's meeting. He suggested floating a limited liability company with a nominal capital of .£IOOO in shares of £1 each payable as follows: —2; 6d on application, 2s 6d on allotment, 5s in four months, and the balance as required. There is no doubt the shares would be rapidly bought up, and it is to be hoped that when the committee have fixed on a suitable sight Mr Tickers' idea may be given effect to.

The rain which commenced early on Sunday morning and has since continued to fall steadily if not violently began to causo uneasiness this morning. Enquiries elicited nothing of a disquieting nature although the Ngararuvo was reported high, and at the time of writing there are no indications of a llood. The borough watertables are in some places rather taxed, but seem to bi abl j to deal wit-h the extra ilow. A few low - lying paddocks in Avenue road and St. Aubyn-street are swamped in places, but otherwise the borough is remarkably free from collected water. At the time of writing the weather shows no signs of improvement. The Magpie Minstrels and their approaching debut in the Princess Theatre on the 17th hist, is the absorbing topic amongst local playgoers for the last week. This eve of the '2oth century is an age in which men and women lift themselves out of the beacen tracks of their ancestors and strike boldly out into new and unbroken fields, leaving those creatures still trammelled with the prejudices and effete usages of a time that was to gaze after them in amazement. Lady minstrels are certainly a departure from the ruts in which the social cart-wheels travelled for ages, and all are on the tip toe of expectation as to how those concerned will acquit themselves, if the rapid acquisition of seafs is any criterion from which to form an opinion. The show promises to be one of the most successful ever produced in Hastings, and Mrs Merewetlier, upon whom the organising and the bulk of the work falls, deserves every credit for the thorough manner in which she has taken things in hand. The following items from Quiz, a smart Adelaide journal, aneutold friends will be read with interest in Hastings:—The " Pollards," as they are familiarly called, are the best behaved theatricals in Australasia. The advantage of Mr Tom Pollard's perfect disclipine in their juvenile days is abundantly evident. Maud Beatty has made herself a great favorite in Adelaide. She is a tireless worker, and always has a pleasant smile for her audiences. Will Percy is qualifying for "Williamson and Musgrove's Comic Opera Company. Lauri leaves the firm, and goes to Kickards in September. Coleman will never do as an operatic comedian, and Percy's chance should not be long acoming—Miss May Beatty is deservedly a favorite. She is'lively and frolicsome, has a pretty face, and is saucy enough in a charming way to soften the frowns on the face of a misogynist.
