A report compiled by the weather bureau shows that in many parts of the colony the position is as bad as at the time of the great dronght of 1883. Scattered districts, however, escaped, as water and feed are fairly plentiful there.
Adelaide, June 10.
Atter holding out for several months, the Operative Bootmakers' Society admitted defeat, declaring the strike off. The men are seeking re-engagement. Sydney, June 10.
Pearce has been promoted to be a senior constable for bravery in connection with the recent burglary arrest.
Lady Hampden, the Hons. Alice and Geoffrey Brand, and the Hon. Gathorne Hardy, the Governor's private secretary, are passengers en route to England by the Warrimoo, which left to-day. Melbottrne, June 10.
Frank Cook, the well-known jockey, was one of the men lost in the snowstorm at Gippsland. He left Omeo to attend the Gippsland races, wandered nine days without food, leading his horse all the time, and lived on snow. His feet were badly frozen, and his sufferings were accentuated by his feet being scorched in trying to unfreeze them.
The Government is offering £IOOO reward for a scheme to efficiently and inexpensively ventilate the mines.
