SPORTING NEWS.

[By Gipsy Gkani>.] The H.B. Stakes winner, Bloodshot, was sold at Melbourne on Wednesday for ,£3OO. Trent, by Trenton, won a double at the Y.R.C. Birthday meeting. A day or two afterwards he won the principal event at W'illiamstown. Merman carried top weight (9st 71b) at Kempton Park (E.) on Easter Monday. He ran well, but failed to get a place. The Skipper, winner of the A.J.C. Metropolitan, and third in last Melbourne Cup, died at Singapore the other day. Paul Pry, by Lochiel, won the Birthday Cup at Adelaide on May 24. Mr T. Stephens, manager of the N.Z. Stud Company at one time, went home in charge of Nen-haven. Eaglet, winner of the V.A.T.C. and V.R.C. Steeplechases, died in Melbourne about a week ago. True Blue was offered for sale recently at Melbourne. The offer of 600gns failed to reach the reserve placed on the son of Hotclikiss and he was passed in. Projectile, by Chester, won the Turf Club Handicap at Sydney on May 22. Kilt, by Lochiel, won the May Stakes, and Burleigh, by the same sire, won the Nursery at the same meeting. Golden Fleece won the Auction Handicap at Adelaide on May 24. Eighteen horses started. Div., £2 10s. Elusinian, by Robinson Crusoe, won the City Stakes at Adelaide. Loyalty was a starter. Le Var, by Lochiel, won the Queen's Plate at Perth on May 24. Rudolph, at one time an associate of Dreadnought on the turf, died from thirst in the South Australian back-blocks the other day. Trentalto and Valiant, entered for the Melbourne Cup, are not, as some people suppose, Mr Ormond's horses, but are Australian horses bearing the same name. Tally-ho, Rhino, and Prince Charlie returned home from Auckland yesterday. Mr Henry's handicaps for the two big local events have been fairly well received. Donald McKinnon, who has been on the retired list for a considerable time, heads the list with 12st 61b. Melinite and Dante, once good performers, follow on with list 131b. Lotion, who has never started in a hurdle race, has not been treated well, by being asked to concede weight to such hurdle performers as Tally-ho, Prince Charlie, Miss Nelson, The Plug, Much Ado, and Prairie Grass. Why Mr Henry should place Lotion above such proved hurdlers is not easy to comprehend. The Plug, Rhino, and Prairie Grass are well treated, and I should not be surprised to see one of the three win. The Steeplechase is headed by that brilliant performer, Mutiny, and, even with his 12st 131b, will take a lot of beating. Morag, with lOst 51b, has a handy weight, but the distance may trouble him. The Plug, Rhino, and Prairie Grass are the most dangerous in the light weight division.
