SPORTING NEWS.
[By Gipsy Grand.] A Press Association wire from Auckland this afternoon states that there will probably be ten starters in the Grand National Hurdles. "Hippona" in the Star selects Ilex to win. At Auckland on Friday last Doris changed hands at 87 guineas and Norina at 20+ guineas. Cleopatra was also sold, but the amount was not stated. Nominations for the New Zealand Cup close to-day. Weights are due on or about July Ist. Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club's Dunedin Stakes, 1897, and Champagne Stakes, 1898, close to-day. The Auckland meeting opens to-morrow at Ellerslie. Hawke's Bay stables are represented by Prince Charlie, Tally-ho and Rhino. My anticipations for the chief events are as follows: —Grand National Hurdle Race—Miss Nelson or Prince Charlie with Troubadour best outsider. Welter —Swordfish or St Gordon. Maiden Steeplechase—Rhino or Tim. Maiden Hurdles—Forella. I expect to see the Steeplechase, run on Monday, won by The Friar.
