CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE.

FORMAL BUSINESS. (P,_r Pw.s.', Association. —C"j>yri;/ht.) Sydney, May 18. The Conference of Chambers of Commerce opened to-day. Mr Marks, president of the Sydney Chamber, was elected president. A congratulatory address to the Queen was adopted, gratefully acknowledging the rapid expansion of the colouial portion of the Empire during her reign. Delegates who waited on the Governor and presented the address were entertained. The president's opening address comprised an interesting review of the commercial progress of the British Empire, especially of Australasia, during the Queen's reign, and in commendation of commercial federation said one of the chief objects of the meeting was to give commercial men of all the colonies an opportunity of discussing national union in mercantile and financial respects. Lord Hampden, who was present, shortly addressed the conference. He trusted their labors would effectively assist the Federal movement.
