Private Benefit Societies.
PROCEEDINGS OPENED. [By Telegraph.] (/V /V-.vs A-siiriati»n.) Dunedin, May 18. The Royal Commission appointed to enquire into the inanagemant of the affairs of Private Benefit Societies held its lirst sitting here to-day. Mr Tregear was appointed chairman, and the Hon. G. McLean asked that someone representing the I nion Steamship Company's Benefit Society be allowed to be present to see what charges were made, but the Commissoners replied that no charges were made and that the presence of any such person would probably be embarrassing to witnesses. Four men belonging to the steamer Waihora have been examined up to lunch. The proceedings are open to the Press.
