SPORTING NEWS.

[By Gifsy Grand.]

Au Revoir is again in training, and his name appears amongst the list of nominations for the Selling race at Dunedin. Hopscotch has started 30 times; won 11 races; placed 4 times, and unplaced 15. His failures have been over long courses. At the A.J.C. meeting. Madge : " That was a close finish, was it not ? " Angela (who held the field-glasses): " No—Aurum won by a whole horse! 1 " —Bulletin. Aurum retires into winter quarters the most valuable asset in horse-flesh in Australia. not even excepting the " now and then " champion Newhaven. Carbine headed the sires list at the A.J.C. meeting, with three winners. Trenton, Grand Flaneur, Newminister and Gazo came next "with two"apiece. Morrison, with three wins, was the most successful jockey. Although one or two owners were dissatisfied with the Park adjustments the majority are satisfied with the handicaps, as evidenced by the number of acceptors, and comparatively few withdrawals are recorded. The English bred Positano, within three months of his crossing the sea, won at Randwick at the recent meeting. Australians do not make quite such a fuss over the win as if an Australian bred had won under similar circumstances in England; but it must be confessed there is not much likelihood of an English handicapper putting an Australian horse at bottom weight, as was Positano. The nominations for the H.B. winter meeting must be counted good both in point of quality and quantity. There are 37 names opposite the Hurdle Race, including some new aspirants to the jumping game, notably Lotion, Daphne, Slumber, Lorelei, and Golden Plover. Ilex is the only South Island horse in the event. Melenite's name appears on the list and it is probable that the last of the daughter of Nordenfeldt and Pearl Ash has not yet been seen. The Steeplechase is represented by two dozen names. The double Grand National winner—Mutiny—is among the number, also a score of others who have been successful over country.
