VOLUNTEERS' LIABILITY.

[To the Editor.] Sir,—l see by your yesterday's issue a local in which you mention the fact of a member of the D Battery of Volunteers being fined £2 10s and costs 7s, for not qualifying for capitation. It would be a great deal better for volunteering in New Zealand if all members of the force fully understood their liabilities with regard to attending drills and other military duties, and also the power officers have of enforcing those required duties. The following is a cutting from the Otago Witness of the 6th inst., which will show you the power officers have under the Defence Act :—" Two young men members of the First Westland Rifles, fined £2 10s each for failing to attend drills, elected to " take it out," and gaily marched to gaol for a 10 days' incarceration.—l am, &e., Discipline. Hastings, 11th May, 1897.
