NAPIER NOTES.
[From our own Correspondent.] Napier, This Day. general items. Dean Hovell lectured in the Theatre Eoyal last night on " The Cathedrals of Old England," on behalf of the relief fund. There was a large attendance. The address was particularly interesting. Musical items were contributed by the City Band, the Club orchestra, and the Cathedral choir. The Mayor stated last night that the relief fund now totalled over £BOOO. The funeral of the late J. Rose took place yesterday afternoon and was largely attended. The father-in-law of deceased, who arrived by the Manapouri, expressed a wish for the remains to be taken to Sydney for interment, but it was thought advisable to bury the body in Napier. Mr J. V. Brown has received an invitation to attend a banquet to be given by the London Chamber of Commerce to the colonial Premiers, but Mr Brown can't spare the time for a trip Home just now, and has respectfully declined. At a meeting of the Fire Police last evening, Lieut. J. W. Smith was appointed first lieutenant, vice Mr Harry Brierly, recently drowned. It was decided to forward letters of condolence to the widows of the- late Lieut. Brierly, Constable Stephenson, and Messrs F. Cassin and J. Rose.
