SPORTING NEWS.
[By Giisy Grand.] The following prices were quoted in Wellington this afternoon on the Thompson Handicap:—4 to 1 Waiuku, 5 to 1 Barshot, 7 to 1 St Paul, 8 to 1 Mannlicher, 9 to 1 Gold Spur and Boreas, 10 to '25 to 1 the others. The stallion Neckersgat was found dead in his box at Adelaide yesterday moAiing In his time he sired several good horses, including Dunlop, the Melbourne Cup winner of 1887. Portsea, one of the finest horses that ever looked through a bridle, was by Neckersgat. Bad luck never come alone, ami, of late, the Karamu stables have fallen in for a large share, and the loss of Dreadnought has not proved to be the termination of bad luck, for this morning that brilliant horse Spindrift broke his shoulder and had to be destroyed. It appears that Tussock, Martyrdom, and Spindrift were performing slow work together on the racecourse, when the bone oftlielattcr'sshoulder broke without any apparent cause. The horse did not fall, but simply pulled up. An examination was made by Mr Sabin, Y.S., and it was decided to terminate the horse's sufferings with a friendly bullet. Spindrift Mas by Nordenfeldt out of Spinnaker and proved' himself to be a good, honest, performer. He established a New Zealand record for I=] mile in the Wanganui Cup last year ; won the Napier Cup last year; January Handicap (Wellington!,and other races. The acceptances for the Wellington meeting which opens to-mosrow show a considerable falling off. Twenty-six horses have been withdrawn from tiie Thompson Handicap, 10 from the Hurdles, ami lti from the Railway. My selection for the principal events is as follows : —Thompson Handicap—Waiuku or Barshot. Waiwetu Handicap—Undine. Hurdles—Much Ado. Welter —Lotion. Kail way—Gold Spur.
